The thought comes that thought is a fast slithering snake

Mind apprehends barely

The poem was written after experiencing ‘something’ moving very quickly beneath my thought. It seems to me, that what we experience as thought is already a left behind thing. The left behind thing is like the shed skin of a snake which is already moving swiftly onward; beyond the thought itself. A fortnight after writing the poem I came across the following quote from the Swedish mystic; Emanuel Swedenborg:

‘We know absolutely nothing about the inner state of our minds; yet there are infinite things there, none of which comes to our awareness. The inner working, or our inner self, is our actual spirit…’  Divine Providence; Stanza 120
