Whakapapa: Written after a conversation with an intelligent & independent woman. The conversation sparked a process of ‘heart/thinking’ within me as to the nature of ‘true intelligence’. Is ‘true intelligence’ what we normally call analysis? (No, but it is capable of deeply personal analysis.) Is ‘true intelligence’ what we usually call logic? (No, but it is capable of a fiercely personal logic.) Is intelligence what we call objective thinking? (No: It is totally personal. It rises out of a connection with a person’s ‘true nature,’ a person’s ‘original Being’, or ‘higher Self’.) ‘True intelligence’ is always integrated with the heart: with the world of deep feeling & core values: with soul. The morning after the conversation, during my time of meditation, the poem began coming to me centered round the image of ‘the blue flame’. I immediately wrote down what came including the word ‘penetralia.’ My mind was uncertain as to the exact meaning of penetralia. I knew I’d come across it before & loved the sound of it. It feels deeply sexual. The ‘penetra’ part of the word feels masculine. The ‘tralia’ feels feminine. Joined together they feel very sensuous: a loving union of masculine and feminine. Is not this union at the core of ‘true intelligence?’ I was pleased to discover when I looked up the word ‘penetralia’ in a dictionary that it means: a) ‘the inmost parts or recesses of a thing or place, b) the most private or secret things.’ The word has evolved from the Latin ‘penetralis’ meaning ‘inner’ which comes from ‘penetrare’ which means penetrate.’1)  So the feminine ‘inner’ and the masculine ‘penetrate’ can be seen as being joined in the word. A synonym for penetralia is the word sanctuary. I also came across a quote from Henry David Thoreau which uses the word penetralia: ‘To the virtuous man (or woman) the universe is the only sanctum sanctorum, and the penetralia of the temple is the broad noon of his/her existence.’ 2)   After I completed the poem I looked up ‘the blue flame’ on line and came across a wonderful Grimm’s fairy story called ‘The Blue Light’ in which a man finds a genie to guide and protect him. When the man lights up the blue light the genie comes to his aid. If you want to read this tale it can be found athttp://www.authorama.com/grimms-fairy-tales-48.html . 3) A final personal association within the poem is a ‘saying’ from the Self: ‘Could it not be ours to transport the Wisdom within the Flame?’ 12/5/12.  Dedicated to C.
