Psalm 35

And I stand at the door and shout
And I knock at the door and weep
And I name my heart evangelist
And I name my heart insane
And I stand at the door and knock
And I shout at the door and weep
And I name my heart religion
The holy, holy honey
And I knock at the door and shout
And I storm to the door and weep
And I name my heart impossible
And I name my heart unique

Whakapapa: This psalm is the second half of a single psalm (34 & 35) that I split & redeveloped separately. The psalm is written out of the experience of the heart. It has connections to John’s gospel: ‘I stand at the door and knock’. In the crisis I was in at Black’s Point, it came to me that if I followed the deep heart I would know what to do. I would know how to live: how & what to write. Several times I took the word ‘insane’ out: softened it. Yet in the end I knew it belonged. The heart’s wisdom can seem utterly insane to the rational intellect.
